The objective of each level in The Lost Vikings is to reach the end with all Vikings alive which is much easier said than done, particularly in the later levels. Coloured keys which are also required to progress through the levels can also be traded to a more appropriate Viking. Any items found in the environment can be traded between the Vikings as long as they are within close proximity of each other. Shield orbs can also be obtained by finding shields and using them. Each Viking has three health orbs that can be replenished by finding food and using it from within the inventory. The death of all three Vikings as a result of combat or environmental hazards such as fire or lasers will require the level to be restarted. Understanding which Viking does what and the combinations of using the Vikings together to solve puzzles is vital to survival. Baleog has a sword to attack and and a bow to shoot buttons with arrows. The shield bearing Olaf is able to block attacks with his shield, lift it above his head for his friends to stand on and can glide down otherwise fatal drops. The redheaded Erik is the only Viking that can jump or use his helmet to charge headfirst into enemies or breakable walls.

Olaf's shield can also be used as a stepping stone for Erik to enable him to reach higher ground, which would not be possible without the shield.The SNES and Genesis versions of each game contain a Rewind feature which allows players to rewind a few seconds to have another attempt at something they may have failed. Olaf can block enemies and their projectiles with his shield, and use his shield as a hang glider.
The bow can also be used to hit switches from a distance. Each of the Vikings has a unique set of abilities:Įrik can run faster than the other two, can jump, and can bash through some walls (and enemies) with his helmet.īaleog can kill enemies with his sword, or from a distance with his bow (and a "life-time supply of arrows"). After escaping through the airlock of the spaceship, they must traverse various bizarre locations to find their way home.Īll three Vikings (Erik, Baleog and Olaf) have three health points which they can lose by getting hurt by enemies or by falling from great heights, and the ability to carry and use items, mainly keys, bombs, and food (which restore health points). In the game, the three Vikings get kidnapped by Tomator, emperor of the alien Croutonian empire, for an inter-galactic zoo and become lost in various periods of time.
